Working Holiday Visa (417)

Allows the visa holder to live, holiday and work in Australia for 12 months.

The following requirements must be met:

  • Hold a passport from one of the following countries: Belgium, Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, United Kingdom
  • Have not previously entered Australia on a Work and Holiday Visa (462)
  • Aged from 18-30 at the time of application
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Have enough funds to support yourself during your stay (around $5000)
  • Have a return ticket or enough funds to purchase an outbound airfare from Australia at the end of your stay
  • Will not be accompanied by any dependent children during your stay in Australia
  • Are a genuine visitor whose intention is to visit Australia for a working holiday

Visa holders cannot work for more than six (6) months with any one employer.

Work & Holiday Visa (462)

Allows the visa holder to live, holiday and work in Australia for 12 months.

The following requirements must be met:

  • Hold a passport from one of the following countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, China, People’s Republic of, Indonesia, Israel, Malaysia, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, USA, Uruguay
  • Have not previously entered Australia on a Working Holiday Visa (417) or Work and Holiday Visa (462)
  • Aged from 18-30 at the time of application
  • Meet relevant education requirements
  • Have functional English
  • Have a letter of support from your home government (excluding Israel, the People’s Republic of China and USA)
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Have enough funds to support yourself during your stay (around $5000)
  • Have a return ticket or enough funds to purchase an outbound airfare from Australia at the end of your stay
  • Will not be accompanied by any dependent children during your stay in Australia
  • Are a genuine visitor whose intention is to visit Australia for a working holiday

Visa holders cannot work for more than six (6) months with any one employer.

Student Visa (500)

Allows the visa holder to study full-time at an education institution in Australia.

The following requirements must be met:

  • Be accepted to study full time in a registered course at an Australian education institution
  • Meet English language requirements (unless studying English)
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Have sufficient funds, or access to sufficient funds, to cover living costs, course costs and return travel costs for yourself and any dependents included in your application
  • Hold adequate health insurance
  • Hold an eligible visa if applying from inside Australia

Courses include, but are not limited to: ELICOS English language courses, primary or secondary school study, vocational training courses, certificate to diploma level courses and university study.

Student Guardian Visa (590)

Allows the holder to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student. The international student must be under 18 years of age and studying in Australia on a student visa.

The following requirements must be met by the applicant:

  • Be a parent or legal guardian of the student, or a relative over 20 years of age who has been nominated in writing by a parent or legal guardian of the student
  • Provide accommodation, general welfare and support to the student, unless exempt
  • Have enough funds to support yourself and any relevant dependents included in the visa application
  • Meet health requirements
  • Meet character requirements
  • Hold adequate health insurance
  • Hold an eligible visa if applying from inside Australia
  • Not have any debts to the Australian government, unless a payment plan has been agreed

Visitor Visa (600)

Allows individuals to visit Australia for short-term business or non-work purposes.

The following requirements must be met:

  • Be outside Australia when the visa is decided
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Australia
  • Have a return ticket or enough funds to purchase an outbound airfare from Australia at the end of your stay
  • May need to provide evidence for the purpose of your stay in Australia
  • May need to meet other requirements, depending on your length of stay and the reason for your visit to Australia

Non-work purposes include a holiday, tourism, visiting family and friends, recreation or short-term informal studies. Business visits can include making general business or employment enquiries; investigating, negotiating, signing or reviewing a business contract; attending conferences, seminars or trade shows as long as you aren’t being paid by the organisers your participation. Under no circumstances can the visa holder work.

Electronic Travel Authority Visa (601)

Allows the holder to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student. The international student must be under 18 years of age and studying in Australia on a student visa.

The following requirements must be met by the applicant:

  • Be a parent or legal guardian of the student, or a relative over 20 years of age who has been nominated in writing by a parent or legal guardian of the student
  • Provide accommodation, general welfare and support to the student, unless exempt
  • Have enough funds to support yourself and any relevant dependents included in the visa application
  • Meet health requirements
  • Meet character requirements
  • Hold adequate health insurance
  • Hold an eligible visa if applying from inside Australia
  • Not have any debts to the Australian government, unless a payment plan has been agreed

eVisitor (651)

Allows the visa holder to enter Australia as a tourist or for business visitor purposes.

The following requirements must be met:

  • Hold a passport from an eligible country
  • Be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided
  • Be travelling to Australia temporarily and for tourism or business visitor purposes
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Not have any debts to the Australian government, unless a payment plan has been agreed

Visa holders can visit Australia for a maximum of three months at a time, during a 12-month period.

Resident Return Visa (155)

Allows the holder to travel to and from Australia as a permanent resident for a period of five years. It is required if a current permanent visa’s travel facility has expired – five years after grant of that permanent visa.

The following requirements must be met by the applicant:

  • Be an Australian permanent resident
  • Previously held Australian permanent residency and whose last permanent visa wasn't cancelled
  • Previously held Australian citizen which was who lost or renounced
  • Spent two years of the last five years in Australia as an Australian permanent resident or citizen (the 'residence requirement')
  • Haven’t spent two of the last five years in Australia as a permanent resident or citizen, but can show substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties of benefit to Australia, and:
  • If lodging their application while in Australia, can show compelling reasons for any continuous period away from Australia of more than five years
  • If lodging while overseas, was a permanent resident or citizen when you last departed Australia and can show compelling reasons for any continuous period away from Australia of more than five years
  • If lodging while overseas, was a permanent resident or citizen in the last 10 years and can show compelling reasons for a period away from Australia of at least five years
  • Haven’t spent two of the last five years in Australia as a permanent resident or citizen, but are the partner or dependent family member of a subclass 155 visa holder, or a Resident Return visa applicant who satisfies relevant criteria for approval

Resident Return Visa (157)

Applicants that don't meet the requirements for the 155 visa can apply for the 157 visa.

The following requirements must be met by the applicant:

  • Have spent at least one day in Australia out of the last five years
  • Have spent less than two years in Australia out of the last five years
  • Held Australian permanent residency or citizenship for the entire period spent in Australia
  • Provide a compelling and compassionate reason for leaving Australia
  • If outside Australia for more than three continuous months immediately before application, and are applying for the RRV from outside Australia, provide a compelling and compassionate reason for being away from Australia

Citizenship

When a person holds Australian citizenship, they have the same benefits as Australians, including eligibility to vote, serve in the armed forces and hold an Australian passport.

Most applicants will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Hold an Australian permanent visa
  • Meet residence requirements – adult applicants must generally have lived in Australia for at least four years, including one year as an Australian permanent resident
  • May not be able to have been absent from Australia for a certain period of time before applying
  • Meet character requirements
  • May need a basic understanding of the English language
  • May be required to pass a citizenship test
  • Have the intention to live in Australia or maintain a close and ongoing relationship with Australia
